International Waltz I

Mixed Newcomer Pre-bronze and Bronze (Student) International Waltz

Who It's For:

beginning social dancers and social dancers who might sometime be interested in keen amateur or performance/competitive Ballroom dancing


What We'll Be Teaching:

- the essential basics of Pre-Bronze Level International-Style Waltz, including 

     - BASIC MOVEMENT*, POISE and HOLD

     - WALTZ TIMING, RHYTHM, FOOTWORK, ALIGNMENT, TURN, RISE AND FALL, SWAY and MUSICALITY

     - FORWARD and BACKWARD WALK

     - "BOX" and BALANCE STEPS

     - CLOSED CHANGES -- NATURAL TO REVERSE and REVERSE TO NATURAL*;

     - NATURAL TURN*

     - REVERSE TURN*

*based on USISTD International Standard syllabus. 


Why We Think This Is A Particularly Good Introductory Dance Course:

- the International Waltz is danced similarly throughout the world including Hawaii;

- we will introduce Contrary Body Movement (CBM)  which is also used in International Foxtrot, Tango and Vienese Waltz.  

- when completed, students should have a good foundation for International-Style Ballroom dancing; and

- using the basics presented in this course, go dancing!


General Structure of the Lessons:

warm-up exercises useful to social, keen amateur, performance and competitive dancers alike;

- introduction of eight basic figures over the seven weeks;

practice time

     - dance as couples under the watchful eyes of both male and female instructors;

     - dance individually with a male or female instructor;

     - dance with partner; meet new partner


What's So Special About International Waltz?

- History: International or Slow Waltz, was considered a scandalous turning dance because of it's close hold. It is danced in 3/4 time at 28-30 bars per minute is said to have be derived from:

- Hold is basic Ballroom closed hold


"Master's Moment" just before the end of the lesson, we will introduce key techniques for better dancing such as better

     - keen amateur and competition posture, hold and frame

     - competition connection and movement

- the essential basics of Bronze Level International-Style Waltz, including 

     Review:

     - BASIC MOVEMENT*, POISE and HOLD

     - WALTZ TIMING, RHYTHM, FOOTWORK, ALIGNMENT, TURN, RISE AND FALL, SWAY and MUSICALITY

     - CLOSED CHANGES -- NATURAL TO REVERSE and REVERSE TO NATURAL*;

     New:

     - NATURAL TURN*

     - REVERSE TURN*

     - NATURAL SPIN TURN (Regular, Underturned and Overturned)*

     - WHISK*

     - CHASSE FROM PROMENADE POSITION (PP)*

Why We Think This Is A Particularly Good Introductory Dance Course:

- International Waltz is danced similarly throughout the world including Hawaii;

- we will review Contrary Body Movement (CBM) and sway, adding to these Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP) which is also used in International Foxtrot, Tango and Vienese Waltz;

- we will introduce the importance and use of lead-and-partnering in non-mirror figures;

- we will introduce the promenade and outside partner positions as well as both pivot (for the man) and pivoting action (for the woman); 

- we will introduce and use a routine (two or more figures performed in succession);

- when completed, students should have an outstanding foundation for International-Style Ballroom dancing; and

- using the figures presented in this course, go dancing!
