NO LIMO

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, December 11, 2023, In : books and movies

READERS sometimes email me at drjanik@gmail.com asking me if, with my wife and I being actors, we regularly take a limo to go somewhere. Well, yes, it’s true Sakura Kai (aka Setsuko Tsuchiya – https://setsukotsuchiya.com) and I, Daniel S. Janik (https://janik.yolasite.com/actor.php) are actors as well as authors, but, ummm, sad to burst the limo bubble, but we walk together to work whenever possible, which is most of the time.

First, weight and body tone always come before luxury. The ca...

WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, October 6, 2023, In : books and movies

YES! I do, like most, have moments of spare time that glare into my eyes, taunting me to do something — anything! — rather than loll away my time here in Hawaii (aka “paradise”), stretched out on a hammock between two palm trees, Mai Tai in hand, languidly watching the tropical sunset.

Yes, well, having experienced just such a month ago in response to the beginning of the SAG/AFTRA strike (which, BTW, has yet to resolve), I decided if I can’t act, perhaps I can at least model. So, ...

WINNOWING (THE MOVIE) AND AN INTERVIEW WITH WILLIAM MALTESE

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, In : books and movies

SEVERAL months ago, consummate author and screenwriter William Maltese offered author/actor Daniel S. Janik and author/actress Setsuko Tsuchiya a written-exclusively-for-them screenplay about auditioning for the “Big One.” To quote the Bard, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely Players…” What could be more central to contemporary life than the constant auditioning/interviewing/screening to which we are endlessly subject? WINNOWING — https://janik.yolasite.c...

TODAY TODAY

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, December 17, 2022, In : books and movies

LIVING in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, is like living in a suspended, sunny California day forever. At least until tomorrow, when the weatherfolk are predicting a strong bout of cold, thunderstorms, lightening, thunder, torrential rain and even icy hail, the latter God(dess) forbid. I’m trying to imagine icy roads in Honolulu, if only from momentarily road-coating hail. Actually, I can’t imagine it. The nearest thing is snow on the top of the world’s tallest volcano, Mauna Kea, or the unusual...

WHAT DOES ONE DO ON A QUIET SUNDAY AFTERNOON?

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, November 14, 2022, In : books and movies

Actor Daniel S. Janik (aka author Raymond Gaynor/Gary Marine) here, nose to screen, typing at my computer on a fantastic sunny but pleasantly cool day. Posting about what? Film, of course.

Setsuko Tsuchiya and I have been filming scenes for Elias Perez’ 2-Liters Shady Films’ production of MOCOS, our first horror film, an especially notable film in that all is done by the actors and actresses (aliens, too?) use Elias’ script, and send their parts in to him for collating and editing. I w...

A LOT OF ADO ABOUT SOMETHING!

Posted by Daniel S. on Thursday, May 5, 2022, In : books and movies

PLEASED as punch to hear that William Maltese’s “edge of the seat” romance, DARE TO LOVE IN OZ (Savant 2009) — https://savant-bookstore-honolulu.square.site/product/dare-to-love-in-oz/100 or https://www.amazon.com/dp/0984117547 — available in printed, digital and audiobook versions, is now a screenplay, ready for manga, animation and cinematic treatment by KS Media Group. “Romance and adventure collide in Australia’s exotic outback as a deadly storm and a deadly killer wreak hav...

PLANT WISDOM

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, In : Knowledge/Wisdom

Something’s going on with the two tomato plants growing on my porch: They’ve suddenly stopped turning red! OMG, does that mean they’re gonna turn blue before November? Ha, ha. No, really, there’s actually lots of GREEN tomatoes remaining green, and they aren’t likely to turn red or blue in the near future. Can plants join political parties? Can they even party at all?

Maybe they’re pondering onion-izing alongside Amazon and Starbuck workers, but instead of going for more water, f...

THE LAST BOOKSTORE

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, February 21, 2022, In : books and movies

WELL, as the real “The Last Bookstore” in Los Angeles, California states on its incredible website, “We’re not really the last bookstore – thank goodness – but we are the largest new and used bookstore in California. Plus, we’re the only one that’s 22,000 sq. feet with a record store, comic book store, 5 art studios, an epic yarn shop, a famous book tunnel, a mammoth head, and unexpected nooks of funkiness. Also we are in a hundred-year-old bank building, so we have vaults and...

WHITHER THOU GOEST…

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, August 8, 2021, In : books

TO follow or lead – that is the question. The publishing world is in such change these days, that much of what we authors used to be able to depend on regarding publicity and marketing is now “out the window” and there’s nothing I’ve seen as yet to replace it. The only solid baseline is and continues to be direct guerrilla publicity and marketing from the author, and, with the rapidly increasing numbers of authors, even it’s impact is slowly being diluted out. I recently finished ...

INVASION OF THE MIND-SNATCHERS!

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, May 7, 2021, In : books

OKAY, so this may sound a but surprising, given the title of today’s post, but “I’m Raymond Gaynor and I’m a plant lover” (if you haven’t already guess that). I live in a high-rise condo and have a small two-foot wide outdoor porch upon which I exercise my secret love, openly, yes, in public. Right now I have three pots of Japanese cucumbers, one of Charentais Cantaloupe, one of Japanese onions, one of hybrid bush tomatoes and one of tiny, mildly spicy Oriental green peppers. One ...

GAMBLING ON OUR FUTURE

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, December 15, 2017, In : Knowledge/Wisdom
Let's get something straight right from the beginning. Much of today's stated ideas regarding "investment" is simply gambling.

In my mind -- and admittedly it's an old (and hopefully wiser) one -- gambling is about risking everything for an uncertain return. Few would disagree. But today's idea of "investment" is that any "fees" as well as any "principal" initially put up is liable to loss; in many instances the "investor" can even incur debt! What an "investment" means to me, is that any and...
