HOW MUCH DO I DESERVE?

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, January 21, 2023, In : books

THAT pivotal question comes in many forms throughout one’s life, like, “Why should I vote for so-and-so?” or “What starting pay do you want?” or “Should I join the military?” or “Is this a good person to date?” or “Isn’t it okay to simply pay myself more?” or “Should I accept the bribe?” It all gets down to how much one believes he or she deserves. Unfortunately, while a specific answer isn’t always simple. the general one, in my opinion, fortunately is, which re...

COMMERCIALIZING

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, In : books and movies

As an actor (Daniel S. Janik aka author Daniel S. Janik / Raymond Gaynor / Gary Martine), I’m always scouting for more acting opportunities. I’m currently preparing for my role in the K. Simmons Production of FINDING KATE -- https://ksmediagroupinc.com/finding-kate and https://janik.yolasite.com/findingkate.php -- a 6-part series about computer genius, Kate Keenan, who develops a scriptwriting program that everyone wants, that, in the wrong hands could be a threat to national security. Th...

CELEBRATING THE FOURTH AND FIFTH

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, July 4, 2022, In : books and movies

TODAY is the fourth of July, the day we celebrate America’s Independence. I like to think of it as the day the nation celebrates my birthday with parties, grills and fireworks, a little myth inculcated by my mother alongside Santa and the Great Pumpkin. Admittedly, letting go of the fourth being a celebration of my coming-into-the-world was the hardest of which to let go. Sigh. Still, when I watch the fireworks tonight, I’ll be happily co-celebrating my own birth.

What most American’s ...

THE GHOST WITHIN THE GHOST WITHIN THE GHOST

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, June 5, 2022, In : books

YESTERDAY, I posted about THE “GHOST” WITHIN THE GHOST, that is, artificial intelligence (AI) slowly penetrating everything we think of as “real.” Today, I’d like to talk about the ghost that is even now supersonically self-developing within AI. Ultimately this question comes down to can AI create and implement its own programs?

According to STXNext, Microsoft and Cambridge University researchers have developed artificial intelligence that can write code and called it DeepCoder. Th...

THE “GHOST” IN THE GHOST

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, June 4, 2022, In : books

IN my Amazon-genre-bestseller, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859, now available in printed, digital and “free” audiobook format, I describe an encounter between the male and female protagonists in which one, while going to work, sends a “proxy self” to the other who has just awakened back at their domicile. Eh? What’s a “proxy self” you ask? Think of sending a loved one a greeting card, greeting message by phone, or text...

FAILURE TO LAUNCH…

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, May 1, 2022, In : books

I’M posting today out of necessity about flying. Airline travel used to be something I looked forward to with delight. No more. Airlines, in my opinion, were already flying the wrong direction before COVID, and, despite the pandemic “shot across the cockpit” continue to make flying something I now purposefully avoid. I’m talking here about flying “regular” or coach class, not Business, First Class or by personally chartered airplane. While “high end” choices that are relativel...

MONEY, POWER OR SELF-ACTUALIZATION?

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, January 24, 2022, In : books and movies

PEOPLE are often generous in advice as to how to “get the most out of life,” humans being mortal and life being finite. But what is it that one should “get the most of” while alive? People who’ve lived in poverty would likely tend to say, “Money!” People whose lives have been determined by overwhelming events, like war survivors, would likely tend to say, “Power!” People who’ve lived their lives and never respected themselves or felt self-satisfaction, would likely say “...

THE FUTURE OF BOOKS AND FILMS

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, In : books and movies

2021 saw continued pressure on publishers of books, and began a whole new era of similar pressure on filmmakers, and it all began with “self-publishing.” That’s not to blame, but simply a strong opinion, leading to an “ethos” of vanity self-publishing be it books or movies. I have always thought of COVID-19 in all it’s various iterations a “shot across the bow” of both. That is, with the loss of many support businesses, the “inflation” of prices coincident with a general d...

SO WORLD WAR TWO WASN’T ENOUGH?

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, December 4, 2021, In : books

THE world having survive two global wars between fascist dictatorships and democracies appears to not have been enough for the losers, rising again from the ashes, this time China, North Korea, Russia, Iran and allies are ready and willing to bet the lives of their people on another attempt at conquering the world. Sigh. Isn’t there enough misery in the world without another war? Or is this simply an ill-fated effect of overpopulation, fueled by individual fear, greed and hatred?

AI: ARTIFICIAL, ALIEN OR BOTH?

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, November 19, 2021, In : books

NOW that’s GOT to have caught your interest! In our world of increasing AI presence, is it artificial or alien or both?

Let’s start with artificial, meaning perhaps autonomous more than non-human, since currently humans write the basic code that’s used in artificial intelligence operations. Autonomous, meaning perhaps that once awakened it doesn’t need a lot of continued human input other than to reboot or fix erroneous code.

Now let’s tackle alien, meaning here not necessarily fr...

KNOW THYSELF

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, May 8, 2020,
The current COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc across the world, causing untold pain, suffering and death. But there's always a silver lining to everything, even as bleak and destructive an event as this pandemic. Being forced to stay at home, cover our faces and maintain social distance leaves us with but one direction to freely look and explore: inward. One of the three maxims carved into the forecourt at the ancient Greek Oracle of Delphi, "know thyself," was followed by "nothing in exces...

FAKE NEWS AND WHAT IT PORTENDS

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, April 23, 2018, In : Knowledge/Wisdom
"Fake news" isn't new. It's been around for centuries in the form of gossip. But society's never had a platform whereby gossip could be shared on a mass global basis, where its mere repetition and topic popularity could elevate it from believability to assumed truth. Bad news in a rapidly globalizing world, where politics and governments can depend on popular "news" to remain in power.

The ancient Greeks taught us that there are five appeals that we as humans tend to accept: 1) logos (well-re...

An Island View

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, July 6, 2009, In : assessment
I promised in my last entry to talk more about student assessment, especially as it applies to transformative (knowledge and wisdom oriented) verses traumatic (data and information oriented) learning.

First, whether there are in fact two different major learning pathways is not really a question much anymore.  In my book, "Unlock the Genius Within" I explored this issue not from an ideational perspective (gosh, that's a good idea) but rather from the perspective of neurobiology (how does suc...
