AND EVEN MORE ABOUT SHARING

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, December 16, 2022, In : books and movies

THINKING about a really heartfelt holiday gift? Consider purchasing a HD DVD copy of the multi-award-winning movie, the K. Simmons Production of STATIC (2021) — https://ksmediagroupinc.com/the-static-movie. An irascible veteran who, having successfully conquered everything life’s thrown him, suddenly faces a new challenge that he can’t win: Alzheimer’s Disease. Yet, through the intervention of a radio that plays only static, and with the loving and sagacious advice from his long depar...

CHILDREN’S HOUR

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, In : books

AUTHORS write for a specific readership, be it that of the publisher, or intent. It’s what makes the big difference between authors and writers, who record and write for themselves (and possibly generic posterity). One of my personal favorite genre’s is children’s books, within which I’ve had the distinct pleasure of pioneering Savant Books and Publications’ “COLOR ME PLEASE” series.

Children’s books seem to many the easiest to write. Ah, yes, write. But authoring children’...

GOING TO THE OPERA

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, September 24, 2022, In : books and movies

MOST people who are operatically inclined enjoy the storyline, performance, color, dressing up and an opera brunch afterwards with pastries and coffee. Me, too. Mostly. Tomorrow Setsuko and I go to the opera as background actors for a scene for an upcoming TV series, NCIS: Hawaii Season Two.

All we know is that there will be lots of opera-goer-actors-and-actresses, theater-service-personnel-actors-and-actresses, a bunch of police/FBI/NCIS-actors-and-actresses, and pirates. The later would ha...

A NEW AUTHORITY

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, In : books and movies

IT’S my distinct pleasure to be the first to announce the ascension of a new authority in the world of dance, acting and authoring, Dr. Setsuko Tsuchiya — https://www.setsukotsuchiya.com — having recently reached the end of her multi-year foray into academia with the final acceptance of her dissertation and completion of her PhD in Performing Arts in Ballroom and Latin Dance Performance. As her dance, acting and life partner, I can personally vouch for the difficulties she overcame in h...

POINT-OF-VIEW

Posted by Daniel S. on Thursday, August 25, 2022, In : Knowledge/Wisdom

CALL it a paradigm shift, a wisdom transformation or weltanschauung crisis, I was thinking this morning that our species has evolutionarily experienced several major shifts in point-of-view, one of the more interesting for me being the shift from a “horizontal” to a “vertical” viewpoint.

We are, after all, descended from the oceans, with it’s particular, salty, “horizontal-axis” orientation, experiencing a major shift to airy, “vertical” bipedal orientation when our ancesto...

CRUISE CONTROL

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, In : health care reform etc.

Just to be clear, I’m not referring to that little switch that maintains a car at a select speed. I’m talking bit time cruise control here, being a cruising enthusiast and baffled about when it’s really safe to return to cruising. The answers run the whole gamut from totally safe (no COVID test needed, no masks, no special onboard infection controls necessary to its simply not safe to crowd together on a cruise ship).

According to Bloomberg — https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletter...

THE STARS WERE OUT THIS AFTERNOON

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, August 12, 2022, In : books and movies

OKAY, so the stars are out 24/7, they’re just hidden by the sun in the afternoon. Except for OUR star, the sun which is exactly the opposite, which is glory-blazing in the afternoon and hidden at night. At night my fav stars are The Seven Sisters, Cassiopeia (the “W” constellation), and Hanaiakamalama (the Southern Cross), not to forget Polaris (Alpha Ursae Minoris), the “pole” star of the Northern Hemisphere, or Polaris Australis (Sigma Octantis), the Southern “pole” star.

But, ...

TOMATOES, TOMAHTOES

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022,

WHAT’S the difference between Chow Mein and Chop Suey? Gotcha there, didn’t I? So, in my world:

According to TheSpruceEats, Chow Mein, (in Mandarin “ch’ao mien” which means “stir-fried noodles”) is the more authentic of the two, having originated in Northern China. If it doesn’t contain something stir-fried along with boiled noodles, it’s not Chow Mein — https://www.thespruceeats.com/chop-suey-and-chow-mein-4077054. “Chow mein is an established recipe where noodles are ...

AN ISLAND IN THE SUN

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, April 8, 2022, In : books

IT’S not uncommon to think of the USA as a “continental” nation, an integral part of North America or the Americas in general. It’s not so common to think of it as an island, surrounded in its totality by water, isolated by oceans from EurAsia. Personally, I think of the good ol’ democratic USA as an “island in the sun” among nations. Not a classic Greek democracy; instead, more in terms of a “nation of free traders.” It seems to me that one particular element that’s made ...

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE!

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, March 12, 2022, In : dance

MY dance partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya, and I will be off all day tomorrow dancing in the filming the “Gala Party” dance scene for Kurt Ken Kaminaka’s (KKK) production of “The Perfect Illusion” — https://www.totck.com/tpi-actors-crew. An “all day” shooting, we’re looking forward to doing a lot of wild dancing in what we surmise will be a scene not unlike that of the dance scene in KKK’s production of “Tales of the Circle Keys” — https://youtu.be/aI5e7m3n_Nw?t=38.

THE DAY BEFORE BEING SHOT…

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, May 29, 2021, In : books

TODAY is the famous “day of rest” before cast and crew of the STATIC movie (https://kspllc.media/the-static-movie) appear on set to film the “bar” scene. While the crew is frantically gathering all the necessary materials, cameras, sound booms, lights, I’m relaxing at the famous Northshore of Oahu island. No whales. They’ve gone north for the summer to feed and party. Just warm sun, cool, frangipani-scented trade winds and magnificent mother ocean gently stroking the course of the...

THE REAL ALIENS I WORRY MOST ABOUT

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, In : books

I’M not jokingly referring here to political refugees or “resident aliens” with “green cards.” I’m talking about, yes, real aliens from other worlds. Pretty much everyone sci-fi has read or seen author and filmmaker Michael Crichton’s “The Andromeda Strain” in which a not-from-this-world microbe hitches a ride on a military satellite returning to Earth to wreak havoc on the human race.

Interesting, in light of a 24 November 2000 CNN article by Richard Stenger entitled, “S...

TURTLE DANCING

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, In : books
Okay, so you've heard of ballroom, Latin, Jazz, even Hip-Hop and Street Dancing, but have you ever seen Turtle Dancing? True, my award-winning "COLOR-ME-PLEASE" children's book, THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2013), is about a couple of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, Isla and Surf, who happen one evening on a dance competition in Waikiki and want to partner dance. But I mean real turtle dancing. As turtles normally do.

Actually, my competition dance partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya, recently published a boo...

TURTLES, TURTLES, TURTLES!

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, In : books
As the author of the award-winning "Color-Me-Please" children's book, THE TURTLE DANCES (Savant 2015), I make it my responsibility to visit the North Shore of Oahu island pretty much every week to check and see if any of the Hawaiian Green Sea turtles are dancing. Silly? Not really. I've spent countless hours watching them surf happily in the incoming waves. The operational word here is "in" as they use their natural built-in surfboards, their shells, more like a horizontal stabilizer riding ...
