CINEMATIC NOIR AND “SOFT” NEO-NOIR

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, June 12, 2023, In : books and movies

OKAY, let’s start at the beginning. “Noir” (masculine) or “Noire” (feminine) simply means “black.” According to a popular online thesaurus, it can be used in a variety of shades of meaning such as dark, absence of light or illumination, obscure, cynical, fatalistic, edgy, bleak, to which I would add in contemporary terms minimalistic. According to Filmlifestyle.com, “During the 40s and 50s, film noir was at its height. The world had just come out of a brutal war and there was ...

THOUGHT CRIMES

Posted by Daniel S. on Thursday, September 8, 2022, In : books and movies

SHADES of George Orwell and his dystopian futurist novel, 1984, that date having already passed into history, with thoughtcrimes moving from speculative literature to the movies with the adaptation of Philip K. According to dictionary.com, grace encompasses courteous goodwill, neither asked for nor deserved, but freely given. Grace is often, in my experience, meted out equally blindfolded. Mercy is compass...

SO HOW FAST IS FAST?

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, February 6, 2022, In : books and movies

THIS is a gripe: Whenever I travel the highways nowadays, everyone seems to be speeding except me, creating a definitely dangerous situation. I mean, when the sign says “Speed Limit 55 mph” does that really mean minimum speed? What’s with the need to speed far in excess of the speed limit not just on freeways (hey, is this really Germany and the Autobahn?) but in urban and even suburban areas. Is it really a 3 year olds responsibility to watch out for speeding cars? Or is everyone on sp...
