"An Ocean of Whales" Now Online

Hello Friends and Readers,

As I've been promising for so long, the "Ocean of Whales" Project is now launched!  There are three, larger-than-the-book "Color-Me-Please" images posted online at

http://janik.yolasite.com/childrens-books.php

Here's an example of each.  All you have to do is click on the image you want to color and print it out (8"x11" full size), use your wildest imagination to color it, and mail it to me at Daniel S. Janik-An Ocean of Whales, Savant Books and Publications, 2630 Kapiolani Blvd #1601, Honolulu, HI 96826 USA.  I'll be collecting your pictures and displaying them in An Ocean of Whales at select sites throughout the world.  The first of the three images is of the mother humpback whale from "A Whale's Tale":

The second image is of a couple of male watchers, singing together:

The third image is of, who else, but our hero and his girlfriend:

The "Ocean of Whales" will soon be visiting bookstores, whale-related-organizations, libraries, camps, stores, city/county/state buildings and will then go "on tour" around the world.  I'm looking for 10,000 colored whales to remind people that our friends, the whales, are just starting to come back, and that they have a rightful place in this world, too.

I love to hear from my readers - don't forget:  I'm collecting photos of you holding the  "A Whale's Tale" book next to some major cultural building or scene.  I post all my photos here on my blog!  Just email me your digital photograph of you holding the book as an attachment.  Be sure to tell me your name, where the photo was taken and tell me if you enjoyed the book.

Sincerely,
Daniel S. Janik

Don't forget my other book SOURDOUGH SCOTT'S BEDTIME FAIRY TALES FROM ALASKA!

Humpback Whales' Tale Continues to Evolve

November 15, 2009
Yes, you read that right!  "A Whale's Tale," released several months ago on Amazon.com, continues to evolve into a larger and larger tale, with humble beginnings in the Mokuleia Beach area of Northshore Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands.

Mokuleia Beach is one of my personal favorites on Oahu:  damaged, yes, but still undeveloped, steeped in a sense of wildness.  It's where I first saw the humpback whales I wrote about in "A Whale's Tale."

Last weekend, as the usual winter winds and showers began...

Humpback Whales Spotted in Japan

September 20, 2009
Yayoi Nanri sends this photo of our famous humpback whales in Oiso, Japan.

A fond "Ohioguzimus," to the migrating travelers last seen in Chesapeak Bay, USA. How do they get from one place to another so quickly?  It's all about reader support - just buy a copy from Amazon.com, and take a picture of yourself holding the book in front of a recognizeable backdrop from your country, and send to me at drjanik@gmail.com and I'll post it on my blog.

Yahoi, an elementary school teacher says whales are...

Hawaiian Humpback Whales Spotted in Chesapeak Bay!

August 29, 2009

Avast me hearties!  Nyssa Cummings swears by Capt. Jack Sparrow to have spotted the two Alaskan-Hawaiian Humpback whales in Daniel S. Janik's A WHALES TALE (Savant Books, 2009) at Chesapeak Bay, Maryland, and offers this photo in evidence thereof.  Good spotting, Nyssa!  And thanks for the picture!  Nyssa says she plans to search for the two whales next in Washington DC, where she expects to find them talking with President and Ms. Obama about the importance of protecting their species in the...

Humpback Whales Migrate to Oklahoma

August 22, 2009
Yes, you heard that correctly:  "A Whale's Tale" made it to Ada, Oklahoma, just in time for the Potontoc County Fair.

Actually, Oklahoma artist Ruth R. Janik, who illustrated the book, and Janna Kelley, a representative of the Fair, spent the afternoon setting up a display on what exactly is involved in bringing a manuscript to publication using "A Whale's Tale" as an example.

The Fair opens the end of next week, and the display is meant for school children county-wide to discover and encou...

A WHALE'S TALE Migrates to New York City

August 20, 2009
One of the most fun things about being an author is seeing where your books eventually end up.  "A Whale's Tale" has been out for about 2 weeks now, and is currently #40 in Children's Nature Fiction Books on Amazon.com.  Thank you readers!  So it came as no surprise when I began getting emails with photos of readers with the book from all over the world.  I love it!  Readers, please send me more and I'll post them here.  After a while, I'll like to create a photobook of pictures in honor of "...

Aloha and Welcome

June 2, 2009
It isn't every day that I get the opportunity to talk directly with readers and potential readers of my written works.  Blogging as blogging isn't new to me, but blogging as a writer begs the question as to what exactly a blog is:  is it a journal of thoughts, sort of stream-of-consciousness, off-the-top-of-the-head laundry list of new ideas, or a forum for serious topics.  I hope you will find this one a delectable combination of all of the above and more.

When I first began writing poetry ...
